Goshen Garden Club Memories Recalled

With past presidents as special guests, members of the Goshen Garden Club met Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. at the home of Mrs. A. B. Ream which was elaborately decorated with flowers from her garden. Mrs. Howard Furbee presided and opened the meeting by reading a poem, Farmer’s Meditation.

Mrs. Furbee told of plans for the fall meeting of Region 5 Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Urbana United Methodist Church.

There will be a coffee hour from 9 to 10 a.m. Members are asked to bring their pre-priced seeds, bulbs, dried materials and live plants for the plant sales table. Mrs. Edgar Hodge will make an arrangement for a door prize. The afternoon speaker will be Dale York of Celina Floral Shop who will present new ideas for Christmas. Reservations are $3 which includes luncheon and must be made with Mrs. Calvin Rutan by Oct. 15.

A letter was read from Mrs. Charlotte Hupp concerning the Historical Society’s Octoberfest Oct. 5 in Urbana. A donation was made toward a gift for the outgoing regional director, Mrs. Roger Peck of Springfield.

Mrs. John Evans, program chairman, told members of the October meeting at the home of Mrs. Robert Runyan. The group will make decorative corn swags under the direction of Mrs. Calvin Rutan. At the November meeting Thanksgiving favors will be made for the Champaign County Nursing Home.

Mrs. Evans then introduced the past presidents who told of many interesting happenings in the years the club has been in existence. Mrs. C. W. Osborn told of the Victory Gardens in World War II. Members of the organization canned 1996 quarts of fruits and vegetables and 399 jars of jellies and jam in one year. Plans for Goshen Memorial Park were started at this time. Club members have contributed much in the way of money, time and plants to the Park over the years. Deceased members have been remembered with a flowering tree.

Mrs. Norvell Hunter spoke of the group touring Cedar Swamp (Bog) before it became such an issue with the Highway Department.

Mrs. Edwin Gannon read from the club history she had prepared. Goshen Garden Club was organized Oct. 25, 1938, with the assistance of Miss Pauline Mills, county extension agent. The club flower is the rose, club tree, redbud and bird, the wren. Under the leadership of Past President Mrs. Roger Mitchell a

Junior Club was organized. Two members of this group, Mrs. Sonja McFann Huffman and Mrs. Nancy Gregg Smith, won the county and state fair 4-H demonstration contests, winning a trip to Chicago, where they were 3rd in the nation.

Mrs. Robt. Morehart spoke of the flowering crab apple trees sold by the club which beautify Mechanicsburg each spring and of the floral arrangements made by the club members and placed in the Public Library, local churches and Veterans Hospital at Dayton. Mrs. J.R. Bullard related memories of the club’s 25th anniversary. The town Christmas lighting contests were recalled by Mrs. Rolland Guy. Many other happy memories of programs, tours, meetings and friends were spoken of by members present.

Mrs. Ream served refreshments to Mrs. C. W. Osborn, Mrs. Norvell Hunter, Mrs. Edwin Gannon, Mrs. Roger Mitchell, Mrs. Robert Morehart, Mrs. J. R. Bullard, Mrs. Rolland Guy, Mrs. Craig Bauman, Mrs. Art Bullard, Mrs. John Evans, Mrs. Howard Furbee, Mrs. Edgar Hodge, Mrs. Robert Runyan, Miss Lois Tullis, Mrs. Bennett Erwin and Mrs. Calvin Rutan.
