Mechanicsburg defeated Urbana, 57-53, in the consolation game of the Skeeter Girls Basketball Classic on Saturday, earning third place.
The Indians jumped out to a 20-11 lead after a quarter, but Urbana narrowed it to 41-39 after three.
For Mechanicsburg, Mikayla Dodane scored 18 points, including four three-pointers in the first quarter. She sat a big chunk of the game with foul trouble – something that plagued her last season. However, she converted a perfect 6 for 6 from the foul line near the end of the game to seal the victory.
Also for the Indians, Elly Schipfer had 17 points, Morgan Hamby had 11 and Kasey Schipfer added 9.
For Urbana, Hunter Rogan had 17 points and Alaina Lyons scored 16. Deserae Johnson tallied 10 points and Bridget Ofori added 9.
“I am proud of the kids. The young girls are having to grow up fast,” MHS Coach Christie Dodane said. “It was a good start for us. We knew Urbana would play us tight. It was back and forth and nerve-wracking for both teams.”
Mechanicsburg (1-1) hosts Shawnee on Saturday, while Urbana (0-2) plays at Piqua on Wednesday.
Triad girls lose
NORTH LEWISBURG – West Jefferson roared to an early 10-0 lead and coasted to a 65-39 victory over Triad on Saturday in girls basketball.
“I don’t know if it was the fact that we had a tough overtime win the night before or if it was something else, but we simply weren’t ready to compete when the game began,” Triad Coach Jeff Merklin said. “West Jefferson is an excellent team, well coached, and they will win a lot of games this year. I was happy that starting the second half, we found a little fire, and the girls played hard until the final buzzer.”
Juniors Alea Ferguson and Tori Thomas led the Cardinals with 11 points each. Triad had 27 turnovers and no assists on the night.
The Cardinals (1-1) host West Liberty-Salem on Tuesday.
