The 2015 National Leadership Conference was held in Washington, D.C., from July 4 to July 9. The conference included FCCLA (Future Career and Community Leaders of America) members across the nation. All STAR (Students Taking Action for Recognition) event state qualifiers had the opportunity to go to Washington and Triad FCCLA’s senior team of Mekayla Campbell, Shilo Cooper and Jeremy King was one of those teams. The students gave an oral presentation to the state judges describing their efforts to teach Triad Middle School students the importance of good communication with peers, family and authority figures and how to stop bullying. The team created a lesson they taught to the students, then helped the middle school students practice the skills they had learned.

As a follow-up to these lessons the FCCLA members returned to Triad Middle School and circulated among lunch tables to ask the students to create a link in a chain that was hung in the school. The Triad Middle School students wrote ways they had learned to stop bullying on each link. Placing third in the state, they then got the opportunity to attend the FCCLA National Leadership Meeting in Washington, D.C., to present their project to FCCLA national judges. The team then competed at National level, receiving gold metals and a total score of 98 out of 100.

Mekayla Campbell said about the presentation: “The judges were really impressed by our presentation. I am very proud of my team and I’m glad I got to spend this opportunity with them.”

The team also checked out D.C . King said, “I really enjoyed taking on Washington, D.C., with my two best friends, an opportunity we’ve all worked so hard for. We got to see all the monuments, the White House, museum and even got to represent Ohio at a Washington Nationals vs. Cincinnati Reds game. Overall it was such a great experience and it will be something I’ll never forget.”
